The story behind the creation of this advent calendar project can be found here.

Here is a list of 24 small gifts under $10 that can be given in Christmas stockings, in a scavenger hunt, in gift bags, as part of a countdown of some kind, or in my case, they are the small surprises that were in the drawers of the advent calendars I made for Christmas 2020.

When I gave the three calendars away, for me the project was over and done with. I could not imagine the gift I would receive in return during the month of December. Without expecting it, I experienced the unveiling! Every day, I got pictures, calls, and messages of surprise and gratitude. Giving a handmade advent calendar is a gift that endlessly gives. A very special thank you to my friend Corine for permission to use her photos in this article.

1- Socks

Sold in packs of 5, in various colors and patterns, I put a pair of socks in each of the calendars.

2- Facial Tissues

Who says Christmas, says winter. And with winter, comes small runny noses. In a small drawer, there were 4 packs of tissues for the handbag.

3- Popcorn

For a movie night, get a blanket and some pop corn.

4- Fancy Hot Chocolat

After a great day outdoors, what better way to warm up than a salted caramel hot chocolate.

5- Garbage Bag

A little whimsy, even inside the trash cans! In a drawer are lavender-scented garbage bags.

6- Hot Chocolate

This time, we find a more classic hot chocolate.

7- Hand Cream

This olive oil hand cream smells great!

8- Ginger candy

I admit I have a weakness for these little delicacies. I spoiled myself and ordered an extra pack of ginger candies for myself. To my surprise, my daughter finds them disgusting ... so I got two packages! Be warned, it really tastes like ginger!

9- Hot Paws

For extreme cold, hand warmers to put in your mittens.

10- Notebook

A small notebook to write down joys, sorrows and fabulous ideas!

11- Garbage bags

Yes, some gifts are redundant, but a change in color, flavor, or smell allows alternatives. This time it's lemon-scented garbage bags.

12- Vapoinhaler

The smell of camphor brings back childhood memories. My mother used to put bits of camphor in our pillowcases. I think this little vapoinhaler smells good.

13- Incense

Now that we are breathing well, why not do a meditation session with incense?

14- Jelly Belly

A pleasure to share. When you discover the more or less tasty flavors of these jellybeans laughter is guaranteed.

15- Bambo Toothbrush

After eating all of these sweet treats, we must take care of our teeth! I chose this item because I wouldn't have bought myself a charcoal bamboo toothbrush, but would give it a try if I received it as a gift.

16- Lip Balm

Christmas is just around the corner! If we have some kisses to give under the mistletoe, we might as well make sure to apply lip balm before!

17- Energy Bar

In case of a little craving, here are some energy bars.

18- Shower Tab

After a big day in the fresh cold air, it is pleasant to take a good hot shower with eucalyptus vapors from a shower tab.

19 and 20- Throat Lozenges

Well yes, it's winter! Lozenges are always useful if you get a sore throat. Two flavors: lemon and mint.

21- Bulk Tea Samplers

An assortment of five different teas: Bombay Chai, Moroccan Mint, African Solstice, Sencha, Estate Darjeeling.

22- Chocolat

When an advent calendar doesn't rhyme with chocolate, it's still hard not to include some in one of the drawers. Ghirardelli chocolate takes me back to a trip to California with my daughter. Sweet memories.

23- Candles

These little handmade beeswax candles smell so good!

24- Star

The surprise in the last drawer is a star, an 18-in-1 tool. In fact, it's a snowflake!

All three calendars were completed at different times. The items were not in the same order and in one of the calendars I forgot to include one of the gifts. In the other, I had one more gift. Also, you have to adapt to the person who will receive it.

This list is not to be followed literally or in order, but rather is intended to inspire you. If it can serve as a starting point for figuring out what to put in as stocking stuffers or inside an advent calendar that you are going to create, well, so much the better!

Here are some items that could have been included:

50-day countdown

Last week I began a countdown: 50 days to my 50th birthday.   Follow me on Facebook or Instagram to see what it's all about.   It is my gift to myself: Every day I share my life lessons and well as try to adopt new morning and evening routines. Oh! And learning and trying does not make me an expert. I’m such a human… Far from perfect but more than okk.

Advent Calendar

In the summer of 2020, while chatting with colleagues about my upcoming 50th birthday, I figured out that on September 1st, I would be 50 days away from that day. I started to prepare for a 50-day countdown. Every day, I prepared and published a life lesson article.  It was an exercise in writing, sharing, introspection, and perseverance. I enjoyed this challenge and when I celebrated my birthday I wondered what I was going to do now.  Little brainstorm with me and myself, I thought about my daughter's birthday which is in January. I did some research for ideas and concluded that I would make an advent calendar. A small cabinet of 24 drawers that can be used for storage, or to be used from year to year for the adoption of a new tradition. And as long as making one for my daughter, I might as well make one for my mother and another for a friend. With the pandemic, we socialize less, which does not mean that we do not think of those we love. So I created these calendars with lov...
